Book I Β· Chapter 1
The Yellow Emperor (Huangdi)
Legendary; traditionally dated to the 2600s BCE Β· The Yellow River plain, northern China
Symbol of the realm: Medicinal herbs, for the medical classic that carries his name
π¬ Science and invention: The Huangdi Neijing (the Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic) is one of the founding books of Chinese medicine. It's written as conversations between the Yellow Emperor and his physicians about the body, the seasons, and health.
π Culture and belief: The Yellow Emperor is honored as an ancestor of Chinese civilization. Legends credit him and those around him with many inventions: his wife Leizu is said to have discovered how to make silk, and he is said to have used a south-pointing chariot in battle.
π Myth vs. evidence: The Huangdi Neijing wasn't written by a ruler of the 2600s BCE: scholars date it to around the 100s BCE, compiled by many authors. Legends often credit inventions to a famous founder, but silk, for example, came from generations of unnamed people.
The book is written like a conversation: the Emperor asks questions, and doctors answer. Asking questions is how learning starts.
The rift has torn open above the Altar. Far to the west, one of the scattered shards of Bixi's tablets is glowing. Broji the Elder sends the Guardians along the Silk Road to find it in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, before Lysis can silence it.
