📖 Discovery story

In 1831 the Scottish botanist Robert Brown, studying orchid cells under his microscope, noticed a small, dark spot in every cell. He called it the nucleus — Latin for "kernel."

Children: The nucleus is the cell's boss. It keeps the DNA safe and tells every part of the cell what to do.
Middle School: The nucleus is a control center wrapped in a double membrane. It stores DNA and sends out copies of its instructions, called RNA, so the rest of the cell can build what it needs.
Teen: The nucleus stores DNA and controls gene expression, guiding growth, activity, and reproduction of the cell.
College: The nucleus separates transcription from translation: genes are transcribed and processed into mature mRNA inside, then exported through nuclear pore complexes to ribosomes in the cytoplasm. DNA is packed as chromatin around histones, and how accessible it is shapes which genes are expressed.
Graduate: The Level 1 'boss' is incomplete. The nucleus doesn't issue orders on its own — it's a responsive, three-dimensional library. Chromatin folds into loops and domains, histone marks and transcription factors set which genes are readable, and signals from the rest of the cell constantly change what gets transcribed.
