HyperGeek Cell Explorer is published by Hyper Intelligence, LLC.

Signing up to play

On this website, after a short free try of Cell Explorer or Cell Shell, a parent or guardian, a teacher or school staff member, or a player who is 13 or older signs up once on each device to keep playing. We store:

  • Your name and email address, and your phone number and school or organization if you give them.
  • Whether you are a parent, teacher, student 13 or older, or other adult.
  • Whether you asked for email news about new worlds and games.
  • Which game you chose, when you signed up, and how many times you have signed in on a new device.

We use this to keep a record of who plays and, only if you ticked the box, to email you news. We don't sell it or share it for advertising. The sign-up is stored with Supabase, our database service, and only HyperGeek staff can see it. Your browser remembers that you signed up so you aren't asked again. To see, correct, or delete your details, email us at the address below.

Children and learners

Children under 13 don't sign up. A parent, guardian, or teacher signs up with their own details, and we collect no personal information from the child. If we learn a child under 13 signed up, we delete the details. There is no advertising and there are no third-party trackers anywhere on the site.

Counting visits

The first time you visit, your browser makes up a random device code and keeps it in local storage. It says nothing about who you are. Each time a part of the site (a game, a lesson, or the shop) is opened in a new visit, we count it against that code, with the day. This tells us how many devices play, which games are played, and whether players come back. We don't store IP addresses or anything else with it, and we never use it for advertising or to follow you to other sites. Clearing this site's data in your browser gives you a new code.

Guardians

Instead of signing up, a child can make a Guardian: an avatar that goes with them into every game. A Guardian's nickname is put together from fixed word lists (like "Brave Turtle 42"), so there is no box to type a real name, and its look is a few part names, like "turtle" and "hard hat". We save the nickname and look with the device code so the Guardian counts as a player and a grown-up can link it to their account. Shop items bought with ATP (points earned by playing) are kept in your browser only. No personal information is collected from the child.

The Guardian Pass

A signed-in adult can buy a Guardian Pass, a monthly subscription that unlocks extra Guardian looks. It never makes a player stronger. Payment happens on a page run by Stripe, our payment processor, which receives your email address and card details under its own privacy policy. We never see or store card details. We keep only whether your pass is active, Stripe's subscription number, and the date it renews. Before checkout there's a grown-up question so a child can't start a purchase. You can cancel at any time from the receipt Stripe emails you or by contacting us.

Exploration progress

The count of organelles you have opened is held in your browser's memory for the current session only. It is never saved to a server and never transmitted anywhere. Closing or reloading the page clears it.

HyperGeek Suite game progress

Your card collection, XP, review schedule, and the Coach's estimate of which topics you know in the HyperGeek Suite games (Cell Quest, Time Shell, Mini Games, and Cell Shell), and which game trailers you have watched, are saved in your browser's local storage on this device only, so you can pick up where you left off. They are never sent to a server or shared with anyone. Use "Reset progress" in the game, or clear this site's data in your browser, to erase them.

Adult accounts for paid plans

Parents, guardians, teachers, and school staff who are 18 or older can create an account to request and manage a paid plan. Accounts are only for adults; if we learn that a child has created one, we delete it. For an account we store:

  • Your email address, which you use to sign in with an emailed link (no password).
  • Your name, whether you are a parent, teacher, or school staff member, and optionally your school or organization.
  • The date you confirmed you are 18 or older.
  • Your plan requests: the plan, the email address to send invoices to, who to bill, the number of students, any note you add, and the plan's status, invoice number, and paid-through date.

We use this only to send invoices, turn plans on, and contact you about your plan. We don't sell it, share it for advertising, or collect anything about the students in your class or home. You can also request a plan by email without creating an account.

Who handles account data

Account data is stored with Supabase, which provides our sign-in and database service. Your signed-in session is kept in your browser's local storage until you sign out. Invoices are created and paid through Relay, our banking and invoicing provider, and the Guardian Pass is paid through Stripe. We never see or store card or bank details on this site.

Deleting your account

Signed-in adults can delete their account at any time from the Account page. This removes your sign-in, your details, and your plan history from our database. Records of invoices already issued through Relay are kept as long as the law requires for accounting.

Workshop requests

Workshop requests are handled entirely by email. Selecting "Request a seat" opens your own email program with a prefilled message. Nothing is submitted through this site.

Offline use

When installed, the app stores its own pages and images in your browser so it works without an internet connection. These files stay on your device.

What you type in lessons

Notes, recall answers, and anything else you type into a lesson or game stay on your device. They aren't sent to us or anyone else.

Hosting and fonts

The site and app are hosted by Cloudflare, which processes standard connection information, such as IP addresses, to deliver pages and protect against abuse. Our fonts and images are served from our own site, so your browser doesn't contact Google or any other font service.

Links to other websites

Lessons link to trusted outside sources, such as museums, journals, and encyclopedias, which open in a new tab or in your browser. Those sites have their own privacy policies.

The iPhone and iPad app

The app shows the same lessons and games as this website. It doesn't ask you to sign up, doesn't offer accounts, plans, or the Guardian Pass, doesn't count visits, doesn't track you across other apps or websites, and collects no data of its own. A Guardian made in the app stays on the device.

Children's privacy

We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, and learners never need an account. On the website, a parent, guardian, or teacher signs up for a child under 13 with their own details. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it. Parents and guardians can contact us at any time with questions.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle information, we'll update this page and the date at the top, and we'll tell account holders by email about significant changes.
